Guidelines for the indirect involvement of visitors and tourists (including people with disabilities) in the management of protected areas

Guidelines for the indirect involvement of visitors and tourists (including people with disabilities) in the management of protected areas

These guidelines are intended to help protected area administrations systematically and meaningfully involve visitors and tourists in the management processes of the areas. The document emphasizes that visitor engagement improves decision quality, strengthens trust in institutions, promotes responsibility for environmental protection, and creates a more sustainable relationship with nature.

The guidelines define the purpose, scope, and key concepts, introduce the stakeholders and their possible roles. Special attention is paid to the principles of inclusiveness – the aim is to ensure that participation opportunities are accessible to all, including people with disabilities.

The document presents the core values that should guide the involvement of visitors, as well as a consistent, step-by-step implementation model. The text describes various inclusion methods and mechanisms, from information and consultation to more active forms of participation.

The guidelines have been supplemented with examples of best practices that help to apply the recommendations in practice in different contexts.

This document is a practical tool that helps create more open, inclusive and collaborative management of protected areas. You can find the document here.

These guidelines were prepared during the SB MANTA project and are available in English.
